What is obstetric fistula?
Obstetric fistula is a childbirth injury in which a hole develops between the vagina and the bladder (vesicovaginal fistula) or the vagina and the rectum (rectovaginal fistula) as a result of long, unrelieved, obstructed labour. Women suffering with obstetric fistula are permanently incontinent of urine and/or faeces.
How is it treated?
Obstetric fistula is both preventable and treatable. It should not be a life sentence of misery. It can be treated surgically, some cases are quite simple to treat, but the majority need quite specialised attention.
Who is Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia?
Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia is a healthcare network, dedicated to the treatment and prevention of obstetric fistula in Ethiopia. Founded by doctors Reg and Catherine Hamlin in 1974, the network now includes the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital, five regional hospitals, the Hamlin College of Midwives, Desta Mender (a centre for long term patients), and rural midwifery clinics. Patients are treated free of charge, thanks to support from around the world. To date, over 45,000 women have had their lives restored.

What happens to the proceeds when I buy from the online store?
Artisans across Africa make the products you see on our online store. When you make a purchase, you are helping to provide income and employment to these artisans. In addition, the profits are used to support the work of Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia. To date, over 65,000 products have been sold through the online store, with proceeds funding fistula treatment for many hundreds of Ethiopian women.
When will my parcel arrive?
We ship worldwide, using Australia Post. Specific delivery times to your location can be found on the Australia Post website.
We are proud of our speedy response times, with orders usually hitting the post within two business days.
At Christmas, we recommend placing your order before 10 December for delivery to Australia (and prior to 01 December for other countries). However, we will continue to pack and ship online orders until approx 18 December.
Can I send my purchase as a gift?
Absolutely. Our volunteers can even include a gift message for you. Just enter the recipient's address at the checkout. You will also need to enter your own details as the biller, so that we can keep you informed about the delivery. We will be careful not to include any pricing information to the gift recipient.
