Our soy tea light lanterns are handmade in Eswatini (formerly known as Swaziland) using the age-old technique of “milleflore”. The soy wax lantern features a hollow centre which houses an organic tea light candle. When the candle is lit, lantern’s design is illuminated, casting a rich, romantic glow.
“Milleflore” – An ancient art
“Milleflore,” or “thousands flowers,” is a glasswork technique which can be traced back to Ancient Roman, Phoenician and Alexandrian times. The technique was revived in the 19th century and perfected in great glassmaking cities such as Murano and Venice.
Millifiori beads made in Venice were imported to Africa in the later 1800s where they were sold or traded for gold and ivory. The beads gained popularity, with North and West Africans making their own variations.
Swazi Candles workshop
Today, the Swazi Candles workshop continues the art of “millefore” using special hard wax to create colourful designs, instead of glass.
Swazi Candles is a member of the World Trade Organisation. They are committed to sharing profits with workers and including workers in decision-making processes. The workshop has created a creative and enjoyable work environment, where all workers are provided with healthcare, food, insurance and travel allowances.
