World Fair Trade Day at the Hamlin Shop

May 11- World Fair Trade Day 2019

Saturday the 11th of May is World Fair Trade Day, a celebration of Fair Trade and the positive contributions it makes to people and planet. Here at the Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation, we are excited to celebrate another World Fair Trade Day and the positive change Fair Trade is making in our world. The Hamlin Shop has a wide range of ethical and Fair Trade products for sale, the proceeds of which support Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia to improve the lives of women living with and obstetric fistula.

What is Fair Trade?

When something is purchased or traded, the lives of those who grew or produced it are directly affected. Unfortunately, this often means exploitation. Fair Trade ensures that farmers and workers are given a fair, living wage and are able to work in safe, humane conditions. This of course has a flow-on effect; with increased wages, whole families and communities benefit as healthcare, education and environmental sustainability is improved. Fair Trade practices have enriched countless communities across the globe encouraging sustainable development, promoting gender equality, and ensuring responsible production practice.

Here at the Hamlin Shop, we are proud to support ethical and Fair Trade practices through the sale of our beautifully unique gifts.

Textiles

Our range of textile products is supplied to us by an Ethiopian member of the World Fair Trade Organisation, who operates a safe work environment for women in Ethiopia, some of whom are cured patients from the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital. Our textile range includes stylish scarves, wraps, tote bags and clutches- a wonderful fusion of traditional skills and modern style.

You can discover our range of beautiful textiles here.

Jewellery

Our range of upcycled jewellery is another testament to how Fair Trade practices transform lives and the communities around them. The beads in our necklaces were originally old artillery shells, which have been gathered from former conflict zones and then refined into beads. The project in Entoto, Northern Ethiopia employs women to skilfully transform these beads into exquisite jewellery creations. A painful past is transformed into something beautiful, and women are empowered through safe, secure employment.
